Power and Energy

A power plant is a مجموعه of industrial facilities that is used for the production of electrical energy. The main function of a power plant is the conversion of energy from its other forms such as chemical energy, nuclear energy, gravitational potential energy, and other types of energy into electrical energy.

Most thermal power plants (about 86 percent) use steam to transfer heat and produce mechanical energy and for this reason are also known as steam power plants. In these power plants, water steam causes the rotation of the turbine and ultimately the generation of electricity.

In gas power plants, gases resulting from fuel combustion are used as the driving force of the turbine. Combined cycle power plants, by simultaneously utilizing gas and steam turbines, are rapidly expanding due to their higher efficiency and play an important role in electricity generation.

Wind turbines are used in regions with suitable wind energy potential. Today, most wind turbines are of the three-bladed Dutch type, and with the advancement of design science, the possibility of using them on small scales and even for domestic applications has also been provided.

A nuclear power plant refers to facilities that, by using nuclear technology and controlling the process of nuclear fission, provide the heat required to produce water steam and through the rotation of steam turbines and generators, generate electrical energy.

Power plant industries, due to the utilization of modern and advanced technologies, have numerous complexities in the field of materials engineering and require the manufacture of components that are capable of operating under very high temperature and stress conditions.

Razi Metallurgy Research Center, since its establishment, has had close and extensive cooperation with power plant industries. The specialized laboratories of this center provide diverse services in the field of power plants.

Investigating the causes of failure and estimating the remaining life of power plant components such as gas turbine blades, nozzles, and boilers, designing and developing the production technology of gas and wind turbine components, and examining the metallurgical properties of superalloys used in this industry are among the most important fields of cooperation of Razi Metallurgy Research Center with power plant industries.
