Today, one of the most fundamental economic and social foundations of countries around the world is formed by the iron and steel industries, due to the urgent need that humans have to advance their purposes in life. With a brief look at the functionality of this vital element, its constructive role can be understood. In addition to its application in building construction, bridge construction, and others, it is one of the essential commodities in the automobile, shipbuilding, and locomotive industries and, in the form of various alloys, constitutes the foundation of machinery technology.

The process of extracting iron from its natural compounds gradually evolved over time until the first modern-style iron extraction furnace, known as the Catalan furnace, was innovated. This furnace had a hearth measuring 75×60×60 centimeters. The evolutionary course of this process has reached a point where today massive iron and steel extraction and smelting plants with capacities of several million tons have been established.

The steel industry is one of the important pillars of the economy of any country, and even per capita steel consumption has been considered as an index for evaluating the level of industrialization of a country. In our country as well, steel plays a very significant role through its presence in major production and industrial sectors.

Razi Metallurgy Research Center, by providing extensive laboratory and research facilities, maintains close cooperation with most industrial units active in the field of iron and steel extraction and production. The examination and determination of the chemical composition and impurities of iron ore and other required raw materials, as well as refractory materials used in this industry, are carried out in the chemical analysis laboratories of the center.

Quality control of produced products including various sheets, billets, rebars, beams, and other rolled products in terms of metallurgical specifications, determination of the type and amount of impurities, and providing solutions to improve properties and reduce defects are among the other services offered to this industry.

Razi Metallurgy Research Center has implemented numerous industrial projects with iron and steel production units in various fields including sponge iron production, pig iron production, steel production, and secondary metallurgy. Among them is the design and construction of a side-blown converter for steel production from cast iron for steel casting units.
